| Why Taragalte? Taragalte according to l' historian Jacques-Miller is the old name of the oasis of M' hamid. In his work entitled " Saharan Morocco of the origins with 1670" it mentions: "On the other hand, archaeology also gives interesting data: in the oases of Mhamid, the remains of the ruins of an important fortified town known under the name of "Qsbet el Aâlouj" a fort of the Foreign legion, was a well-known fortified town with the local traditions. It appears to have to been identified with the qasba where the Saâidian Sultans had their customs and their gold currency and where they struck their coins. However, this famous Saâidian qasba was precisely located near the important town of Taragale (Marmol III, 15) With this archaeological index (ruins of large a qasba used to protect the foreign legion of the Saâidian Sultans in the elbow of Draa) in addition to another topographic order given by Marmol : The powder come from Sudan (by Terhaza) was melted, weighed and marked in the Castle close to Taragalte before being sent to Lektaoua and to Marrakech. The index states that Taragale and its qasba were in an oasis more to the south than that of Lektaoua and it could only be what we call M'hamid today". |
